Meet Superstar, he's a 30 year old 11hh pony with Cushing's. I clipped off his extremely thick winter coat to get him ready for the warm summer weather Even on medication his coat was too thick for him to be comfortable in the summer.

Why should you consider clipping your horse?
Does it take you forever to cool your horse down after a ride? Maybe you can't ride for very long because your horse sweats up so bad? Clipping is a great option for riders facing these issues, who want to remove a bit of fuzz from their equine companions. Clipping your horse in the winter, even partially, can be a great time saver as it will help your horse stay cooler equaling more time riding and less time cooling out after you ride. It can help horses who sweat excessively or those who are entering a winter conditioning program for the next show season. Clipping your horse will also help you cut down on grooming time, since you won't be struggling with as much of that thick winter fluff. In the spring clipping can also help horses with conditions like Cushings, who just don't shed out their winter coat in time for the hot summer weather. Full body clips are also great for show horses that haven't grown out their partial winter clips by the beginning of the season. Clipping of the legs can also be used to help prevent or control some conditions like scratches or mud fever. This requires other care as well, but removing some of the hair can help make treatment easier. |
